Here and Now new portrait series.
Yan's new portrait series 'Here and Now', commissioned by Manchester Museum, has just gone on display at the brand new Lee Kai Hung Chinese Culture Gallery in the Museum. The museum had a spectacular re-opening last night on the 16th Feb, having been closed for two years for major expansion. In 2022 Yan was invited to make a series of portraits for the British Chinese communities in and around Greater Manchester. Digging into her longstanding interests in landscape, identity and migration, she decided to place her sitters outside in the open: on the moors, in the gardens and backyards, and in the woodlands. She tried to portray their 'Britishness' instead of their 'Chineseness', since the former embraces the latter. The series is titled as 'Here and Now', referring to the communities firm footing here now in the British landscapes. The portraits are now part of the permanent display at Lee Kai Hung Chinese Culture Gallery in the Museum.
